'Home' for the Holidays
If you had asked me how I planned to welcome the New Year, I never would have guessed that I would be back in Bucuresti, Romania, watching fireworks from the roof of Acasa. It is unlikely that whipped cream fights or kiddy champagne would have been on my agenda for the evening. But I would not trade the memories for the world. The boys were practically dancing with excitement as Romania celebrated the New Year 2007, as well as Romania’s integration into the EU, and their enthusiasm was contagious.
When I arrived at Acasa, I heard that many of the boys were spending the holidays with extended family or with educators from Acasa. For the first few days there were only 5-7 boys there, and I was able to spend a lot of time playing games with them and getting to know them. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to help to make their holiday special. We played countless games of Connect 4, but I can not say that my strategy improved much! The boys loved beating me at their favorite game. At least with UNO there was the element of chance…
I also enjoyed speaking with the educators and staff from Acasa. They were kind and welcoming, and graciously put up with my attempts to speak Romanian. It was a pleasure to get to know them, and I learned much from them about life in the country that I would like to call home someday. They helped to make my stay at Acasa very enjoyable.
I hope to have the opportunity to return to visit Acasa the next time I am in Romania. I have wonderful memories of my time at Acasa, and I already miss the boys there. Dumnezeu sa va binecuvanteze, si sper sa revin in curand!
