Q. Can I adopt a child?
A. The short answer is no! Romanian law does not permit international adoption of Romanian children. In any case, RICF’s policy is to get Romanian children reintegrated into Romanian society. We believe that Romanian children will do best within their own culture.
Also, if the love and compassion that people feel towards a Romanian child can be channelled into giving, then many more children can potentially be helped, as it is much more cost effective to care for Romanian children within their own country. Q. Can the children be adopted within Romania?
A. This is certainly an option which is ideal for children if families are prepared to make this commitment. It is likely that the placement would start off as a fostering arrangement or a simple placement (the case when a potential adoptive mother has other paid employment) and as the relationship deepened between the family and the child, the family may choose to apply for adoption, which would be decided by the family courts.
The main obstacle to this in Romania is that fostering is a paid job, and adoption would mean no more financial support towards caring for the child. There are few Romanian families who can afford to care for an additional child without financial support.
